Bonfire Night Hog Roast - Bonfire Night Catering

Britain is a nation which is packed full of traditions. Just as hog and spit roasting dates back to before the time of ‘modern man,’ the traditions and customs which line the cloth of the British suit allow for some of the most interesting and enjoyable festivals and celebrations.

As is well known by many, the concept of flame roasting a whole animal above a turning and rotating spit is a method of food preparation which dates back for many thousands of years. In the same way, the celebration of Bonfire Night (otherwise known as Guy Fawke’s night) is a tradition which has been around for a long time.

In our modern lives that we live in, we often find ourselves in search of the ‘quick fix’ solution as regards the options we decide upon in the arena of food. Symbolized with the existence and rise of the Microwave oven within western society, the overall trend in recent years in many aspects of our lives revolve around speed. Within this, it is the case that many of our working lives are much more hectic also, which is something that both affects the quality of food we often eat, whilst also negatively affecting the amount of quality time we spend with loved ones and friends.

The celebration of Bonfire night is a time which is filled with dancing flames and fireworks. Wrapped up in the mysticism of the event, many people spanning all age ranges love to get involved in a party which revolves around the murky, night-time actions of men long since past. Hog roasting functions catered by us at such events go together with this yearly occurrence like carrots and swede, they are almost meant for each other. Our machines, reflecting the bonfire in front of them, use dancing flames to cook, as the flames out side light up the faces of the revelers there present. Simply fantastic and the feedback we have received supports this whole-heartedly.

Bonfire night is a celebration of the actions surrounding the capture of men in the year of 1605 within the city of London. Due to the King of England at the time being a Protestant, it was the express wish of a group of Catholic men to remove the Protestant hub of governance within the British government. Thus, the men, including the famed Guy Fawkes, searched the Houses of Parliament in order to find a suitable means of gaining access to their aim; which was to kill the king and his immediate cohorts by any means necessary. Finding a under-cut area seldom used beneath one of the main meeting rooms within the House, the men began to plot and plan their method to remove the King from the Throne. Over time, the men gathered many barrels of gun-powder beneath the stone room, eventually covering them with scraps of wood and cloth to make it appear as though nothing was out of the ordinary (as this was a relatively dirty section of the under-room area of the main rooms and chambers). Slowly and surely, the conspirators honed their plans through obtaining certain intelligence as regards the movements of the King. After deciding that the 5th of November would become the day in which the bomb would be set, the conspirators left the area with just one man to guard the hoard.

This man was Guy Fawkes. A problem arose when the men realized that some Catholics may be present in the chamber at the point they wished to detonate the incendiary, therefore they composed a note for the benefit of William Parker, who was a Catholic member of the court who was going to be present in the room that was about to be pulverized. Unfortunately for the conspirators, this message was passed to the King who ordered a full and comprehensive search of the Palace of Westminster (the formal name of the Houses of Parliament, or ‘Commons’). During the evening search, the King’s men found Guy Fawkes hiding in the eaves and searched him. Finding matches and wood on his person, he was immediately arrested. Along with a large team of Catholic conspirators, all the men were tried and found guilty of treason. Beheaded, and with their heads placed on spiked outside the Palace, the plan was comprehensively foiled, and the king lived on.

Back then, as is the case now, this story captured the imagination of the press and public. A true ‘cloak and dagger’ crime which captured everyone’s imagination, the public began to quickly celebrate the foiling of the plan by burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes ach year on November the 5th. Added to this, to simulate and symbolize the crime itself, fireworks were used to mirror the actions of the incendiaries which were intended to be the implements which ended the Kings life. Over time, people have come to add to this celebration, by eating toffee and gathering around huge fires to celebrate the occasion. In today’ society, people love to celebrate the function on a large scale, with all small towns, major towns and cities holding a huge fire which many people can attend if they wish.

Our catered services are seemingly purpose built for this occasion, and have helped to create some of the most memorable and fantastic functions which they have ever experienced. First of all, or hog and spit roast catered services allow for excellent food to be eaten, which is the fundamental mainstay of our catering approach. This is achieved through the use of brilliantly sourced whole meat products, which lend themselves perfectly to our piquant seasonings and epic roasting method.
